Abstract

La difusión de los libros que llegaron a Veracruz de Europa fue muy amplia. En las flotas venían “mercaderes en tránsito y vendedores trashumantes y, entre las mercancías con destino al Nuevo Mundo, iban libros porque alcanzaban mayores precios en las colonias que en la madre patria, hacían poco bulto, y dejaban un margen de ganancia muy halagiieño” (Irving A. Leonard 1979: 193), Los libros no se concentraron únicamente en la ciudad de México. Por una parte, tenemos documentos que hablan de la existencia de libros en Guadalajara y Zacatecas; además, en las bibliotecas todavía se conservan valiosos ejemplares de obras impresas en ciudades europeas en los siglos XV y XVI (Lorna Lavery Stafford 1948; Robert Duclas 1957 y 1961), no se diga de libros editados en el siglo XVI y en el siglo XVI.
